Drug Uses
Zyban is intended to help to give up smoking. However this drug may also be prescribed to treat several other conditions by your doctor.
How Taken
Take the medication in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read information at the box label to find out appropriate dosage.
- The medication should be taken orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it.
- Take the whole pill at once without chewing or crushing it.
- The medication may need several weeks before the effect will be apparent. Do not stop taking the drug without previous talking to your doctor.
- Take the drug at the same time everyday in periods of at least 8 hours unless your doctor provided you with other directions. Following this schedule will help you to decrease the possibility of the seizures caused by the drug intake.
- About one week is needed for the drug to start working. The treatment should be started when you are still smoking. But, you should consult with your doctor and choose a certain date throughout the second week of the treatment to stop smoking.
- In case the situation doesn’t improves until the 12th week of the therapy contact your doctor.
- In case you cannot give up smoking while treating with the Zyban than you should discuss your situation with your doctor. After any possible obstacles are eliminated you should try to give up smoking once again.
Do not stop the therapy even your condition becomes better. Avoid missing any doses.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Zyban is used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. At least one brand of Zyban is used to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal effects.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug skip it and follow you usual schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the drug at the temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of the children and pets. It is allowed to keep the medication at the temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for a short period of time. Avoid keeping the drug in the bathroom.
Warnings/Precautions
Don’t take the medication in case:
- you experience allergic reaction to any component of the drug;
- you use any other medication including bupropion;
- you experienced eating disorder or seizures;
- you have sharply stopped to drink alcohol or use sedatives after using them throughout a long period of time.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Certain medical conditions may come into interaction with Zyban. Let your doctor know in case you experience any medical condition and especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant, or you are at the pregnancy or breast-feeding periods;
- you use any prescribed or not prescribed medicines as well as herbal or dietary preparations;
- you experience allergic reactions to drugs, foods and etc;
- you or anyone of your family ever had a bipolar disorder as well as other kind of mental or mood problems, suicidal thoughts and attempts to suicide and alcohol or substance abuse;
- you have such problems as diabetes, kidney problems, high blood pressure, heart problems as well as a recent heart attack;
- you experienced seizure, injury of head, brain or spinal cord tumor as well as certain liver problems.
Certain medications may come into interaction with Zyban. Let your doctor know in case you use any other drugs especially such as:
- amantadine, antipsychotics (eg, haloperidol, risperidone), corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), insulin, levodopa, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), nicotine patches, oral hypoglycemics (eg, glipizide), other antidepressants (eg, fluoxetine, amitriptyline), sympathomimetics (eg, pseudoephedrine), theophylline, or tiagabine as they can lead to increased side effects of Zyban;
- carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or phenytoin as they may lower the effect of the Zyban intake;
- antiarrhythmics (eg, propafenone, flecainide), beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol), phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants (eg, fluoxetine), or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, nortriptyline) as Zyban may increase the possibility of these drugs side effects.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you have any of the following side effects:
- anxiety; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness; stomach pain; stuffy nose; trouble sleeping.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision or other vision changes; chest pain; concentration problems, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated sense of well-being, inability to sit still, or other unusual or severe mental or mood changes; confusion; changes in sexual desire or ability; delusions; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever or chills; hallucinations; hearing problems or ringing in the ears; joint or muscle pain; menstrual changes; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe headache or dizziness; severe or persistent anxiety, agitation, restlessness, or trouble sleeping; shortness of breath; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should use the medication. Avoid giving it to anyone else.
