Drug Uses
Uroxatral is intended to treat signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP) in men who have enlarged prostate. However your doctor may prescribe this drug to treat several other conditions as well.
How Taken
Take the medication in accordance with your doctor prescriptions.
- Take the drug orally throughout the meal. Take it with the same meal every day.
- Swallow the whole pill without crushing or chewing it in advance.
- Take the medication at the same time every day not to miss the next dosage.
- Use the medication regularly to obtain the maximal effect from the therapy.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Uroxatral is an alpha-blocker. It works by blocking receptors in the lower urinary tract, causing smooth muscles in the bladder neck and prostate to relax. This relaxation improves urine flow and reduces the symptoms of BPH.
Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten to take the medicine do it at the moment you have remembered about it but skip it in case it is the time for your next dosage and follow your common schedule further. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets.
Warnings Precautions
Don't use the medication in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any of its components;
- you experience liver disease from moderate to severe;
- you are using an alpha-blocker (e.g., prazosin), an azole antifungal (e.g., ketoconazole), or an HIV protease inhibitor (eg, ritonavir).
In case you experience any of these conditions contact your doctor immediately.
Note :
- Taking the drug may cause such side effects as drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness. Intake of alcohol or other medications may worsen these side effects. Thus take the Uroxatral with caution and avoid operating any machinery until you are aware of your body reaction to this drug.
- Taking the drug may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. And such factors as alcohol, hot weather, exercises or fever may worsen these side effects. Thus avoid sharp movements to prevent thee effects to occur.
- Be careful when fainting may lead to certain injury.
- Discontinue therapy in case you experience chest pain and contact your doctor.
- It is not clear whether the drug is safe for children thus children should not be treated by this medication.
- Contact you doctor before taking the medication throughout pregnancy and breast-feeding periods.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case following side effects last for a long period of time:
- dizziness; drowsiness; headache; stuffy nose.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); back pain; chest pain; decreased sexual ability; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; joint pain; painful, prolonged erection; severe or persistent dizziness; stomach or abdominal pain; unusual fatigue or weakness.
