Drug Uses
Tofranil is intended to treat depression. It may be also used to decrease bedwetting in children. However your doctor may prescribe this drug for several other conditions.
How Taken
Take the medication in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read the information on the label to find out the proper dosage. Read also enclosed Medication guide every time you are going to renew your drug supply.
The medication should be used orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it. Use the medication before going to bed to decrease the side effects. Consult about this with your doctor. The effect of the drug therapy may reveal in 1-3 weeks after the start of the treatment. Don't stop the therapy even in case your condition improves. Avoid missing the dosages.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Tofranil is a tricyclic antidepressant. It works by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain that help elevate mood.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug do it at the moment you have remembered about it but skip it in case it is the time of the next dosages and follow your common schedule. Avoid taking 2 doses simultaneously. In case you use the drug only once a day before going to bed then skip the missed dosage next morning.
Storage
Keep the drug at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of the children and pets.
Warnings/Precautions
Don't take the drug in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any component of the drug;
- you used furazolidone or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) throughout the last 2 weeks, or you use astemizole, droperidol, or terfenadine;
- you experienced heart attack recently.
Contact your doctor immediately in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Tofranil may come into interaction with certain medical conditions. Let your doctor know in case you experience any of them and especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant or you are at the pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- you use any prescribed or not prescribed drugs as well as herbal or dietary preparations;
- you experience allergic reactions to drugs, foods and etc;
- you use alcohol a lot or ever had alcohol abuse;
- you use thyroids or ever had overactive thyroid, glaucoma, heart, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, seizures as well as blood disease porphyria or difficulty when urinating;
- you ever had thoughts or attempts to suicide, bipolar disorder as well as any other mental problems or you are experiencing electroshock therapy or going to have any surgery.
Tofranil may come into interaction with certain drugs. Let your doctor know in case you use any other drugs especially such as:
- azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole), cimetidine, duloxetine, flecainide, methylphenidate, mibefradil, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), propafenone, quinidine, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), or terbinafine as they may contribute to the growth of the Tofranil's side effects;
- arsenic, astemizole, droperidol, furazolidone, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), pimozide, streptogramins (eg, dalfopristin), terfenadine, or tramadol as they may increase the possibility of high blood pressure, heart problems and seizures;
- barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital) or phenytoin as they may lower the effect of the Tofranil usage;
- anticholinergics (eg, benztropine), carbamazepine, or sympathomimetics (eg, phenylephrine) as Tofranil may contribute to the growth of these drugs side effects;
- clonidine, guanethidine, or guanfacine as Tofranil may lower the effect of these drugs intake.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the following side effects for a long period of time:
- dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; excitement; headache; impotence; nausea; nightmares; pupil dilation; sensitivity to sunlight; sweating; tiredness; upset stomach; vomiting; weakness; weight loss or gain.
Contact your doctor at once in case you have any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision or other vision changes; changes in sex drive; chest pain; confusion; constipation; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; frequent or difficult urination; hallucinations; impulsive behavior or other unusual changes in behavior; jaw, neck, or muscle spasms; mental or mood changes (eg, increased anxiety, mood swings, agitation, irritability, nervousness, restlessness); panic attacks; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe dizziness or drowsiness; sore throat; stomach pain; suicidal thinking or behavior; swelling of the testicles; tremor; trouble sleeping; trouble walking or keeping your balance; twitching of the face or tongue; uncontrolled movements of arms and legs or stiffness; unusual bleeding or bruising; worsening of depression; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should take this drug. Avoid giving to anyone else. Contact your doctor in case your condition remains the same or worsens.
