Drug Uses
Tetracycline is intended to treat bacterial infections like urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and others.
How Taken
Take the drug in accordance with your doctor's directions.
- take the medication orally in 1-2 hours before the meal.
- Take the drug with water and avoid lying within 30 minutes after the intake of the drug.
- Avoid taking antacids that contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium; preparations containing bismuth, iron, zinc, or sodium bicarbonate; or calcium rich foods (e.g., milk, dairy products, calcium-enriched juices) within 2-3 hours after the intake of the drug. Contact your doctor in case you have any questions.
- Don's stop therapy to clear up the infection even in case you conditions has improved after few days of the therapy.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Tetracycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by slowing the growth of sensitive bacteria by interfering with the production of proteins needed by the bacteria to grow. Slowing the bacteria's growth allows the body's defense mechanisms to destroy them.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug do it at the time you have remembered about it, however skip it in case it is the turn of your next dosage and follow your usual dosage shedule. Avoid taking 2 doeses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets. Avoid keeping the medicine in the bathroom. However it is allowed to keep the medication at the temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for a short period of time.
Warnings Precautions
Don't take the medicine in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any of its component or other tetracycline antibiotics
- you are at the acitretin ot methoxyflurane therapy period.
In case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions contact your doctor at once.
Important :
- Taking medicine may lead to dizziness or blurred vision that could be worsened by the intake of the alcohol or other drugs. Thus use Tetracycline with caution and avoid operating any machinery until you are not aware of your body reaction to it.
- In case you experience stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools contact your doctor at once and don't treat diarrhea before consulting with the doctor.
- Take the medication for the whole therapy period, otherwise it may not act properly as bacteria may become less sensitive to the drug and thus make it harder to clean it up in the future.
- Taking the drug may cause you to acquire a tan more easily. Therefore avoid prolonged being at the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths or wear sunscreen clothes until you are not aware of your body reaction to it.
- Don't take the drug out of the expiry date, as it might be quite toxic to kidneys.
- Prolonged use of the medicine or repeated therapy period may lead to second infection. In case you feel any symptoms of it contact your doctor at once as it may be necessary to change the medication.
- Taking the drug may make hormonal birth control methods ineffective. Thus use additional method of birth control to avoid pregnancy.
- You may need to have several lab tests throughout the therapy period. This is required to monitor your condition, don't miss these tests.
- Using the medication in children may lead to permanent bleaching of the teeth.
- Children below 8 years old should use the drug with caution, as it is not known yet whether the drug is safe and effective in this age.
- Taking the medicine may harm human fetus. Contact your doctor before taking the drug throughout pregnancy and breast-feeding periods.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you have any of the following side effects for a long period of time:
- black hairy tongue; blurred vision; bulky loose stools; diarrhea; difficulty swallowing; fever; headache; hives; hoarseness; indigestion; inflammation or redness of tongue; joint pain; loss of appetite; mouth sores; nausea; rash; sensitivity to sunlight; sore throat; stomach pain; swelling and itching of the rectum.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); infection (fever, chills, sore throat); itching; nausea; severe skin reaction to the sun; vaginal irritation or discharge; vomiting.
