Drug Uses
Seroquel is intended to treat schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. However your doctor may also prescribe this drug to treat several other conditions as well.
How Taken
Take the drug in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read the information on the medicine label to find out the appropriate dosage. The medication should be taken orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it. Take the medication at the same time everyday not to miss dosages. Using the medication regularly will be the most effective. the effect of the treatment may need several weeks to become apparent. Don't stop treatment even in case your condition becomes better. Avoid missing the dosages.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Seroquel is an antipsychotic. It works by altering the balance of certain chemicals that occur naturally in the brain, which are responsible for thinking and behavior.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the medication do it at the moment you have remembered about it however skip it in case it is the time for your next dosage and follow your regular schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets. It is allowed to keep the medication at the temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for a short period of time. Avoid keeping the drug in the bathroom.
Warnings/Precautions
Don't take the medication in case:
- You experience allergic reaction to any component of the Seroquel.
Contact your doctor immediately in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Certain medical conditions may come into interaction with Seroquel. Let your doctor know in case you experience any medical conditions especially in case:
- You are going to become pregnant or you are in pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- You use any prescribed or not prescribed medications, herbal or dietary preparations;
- You experience allergic reactions to medications, foods and etc;
- You or anyone of your family ever had bipolar disorder, suicidal thoughts or attempts as well as other mental or mood problems or diabetes;
- Your intake of alcohol is excessive or you have experienced alcohol or substance abuse;
- You experience Alzheimer disease, dementia, or trouble swallowing, as well as excessive weight;
- You experienced certain heart problems, strokes, blood vessel problems as well as high blood cholesterol level or high or low blood pressure;
- You experience certain blood, liver, thyroid problems as well as cataracts, narrow-angle glaucoma, seizures, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), high blood prolactin levels, or breast cancer.
Certain medications may come into interaction with Seroquel. Let you doctor know in case you use any other medications especially such as:
- Alpha-blockers (eg, doxazosin) or medicine for high blood pressure as they may increase the possibility of decreased blood pressure;
- Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), fluvoxamine, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), or telithromycin as they may contribute to increased side effects of Seroquel;
- Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), phenytoin, rifampin, or thioridazine as they may lower the effect of the Seroquel intake;
- Dopamine receptor agonists (eg, pramipexole) or levodopa as Seroquel may decrease the effect of these drugs use.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the following side effects for a prolonged period of time:
- agitation; back pain; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; indigestion; runny nose; sore throat; stomach pain; weakness; weight gain.
Contact your doctor immediately in case you have any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; high blood sugar (eg, thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, or fruity breath odor); increased or irregular heartbeat; involuntary, uncontrolled muscle movements; lightheadedness when rising from a seated or lying position; muscle stiffness; sweating; tremor; unexplained fever; vision changes.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should use this medication. Avoid giving it to anyone else.
