Drug Uses
Luvox is intended to treat social anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder. However your doctor may also prescribe this drug for several other conditions.
How Taken
Take the medication in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read the information on the label to find out proper dosage. Read also a Medication guide that is enclosed to the drug every time you are going to renew your drug supply.
The medication should be taken orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it. Take the whole pill at once without chewing it or crushing. The medication should be used before going to bed unless you have other doctor recommendations. Don’t stop the therapy even in case your condition becomes better. Avoid missing the dosages and don’t stop the treatment abruptly without previous consulting with your doctor. Taking the drug may lead to certain side effects, like mental or mood changes, numbness or tingling of the skin, dizziness, confusion, headache, trouble sleeping, or unusual tiredness. Your doctor will appoint you a close monitoring at the start of the treatment and each time your dose will be changed.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Luvox is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to decrease anxiety and obsessive or compulsive behavior.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug do it at the moment you have remembered about it however skip it in case it is time for your next dosage and follow your common schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets.
Warnings/Precautions
Don’t take the medication in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any component of the drug;
- you use or used monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (e.g., phenelzine), selegiline, or St. John's wort throughout the last 2 weeks;
- you use alosetron, cisapride, a fenfluramine derivative (e.g., dexfenfluramine), an H antagonist (e.g., astemizole, terfenadine), nefazodone, pimozide, ramelteon, sibutramine, thioridazine, or tizanidine;
- you experienced heart attack recently.
Contact your doctor immediately in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Certain medical conditions may come into interaction with the drug. Let your doctor know in case you experience any medical conditions and especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant or are in pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- you use any prescribed or not prescribed drugs, herbal or dietary preparations;
- you experience allergic reaction to drugs, foods and etc;
- you or anyone of your family ever had bipolar disorder as well as other mental or mood problems, thoughts or attempts to suicide or alcohol abuse;
- you ever had seizures, heart, liver problems, bleeding of stomach or bowel, diabetes as well as blood, bone marrow or metabolism problems;
- you are dehydrated, experience decreased blood sodium levels or take a lot of alcohol or smoke a lot;
- you are going to have electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
Certain drugs may come into interaction with Luvox. Let your doctor know in case you use any other medications especially such as:
- anorexiants (eg, phentermine), fenfluramine derivatives (eg, dexfenfluramine), linezolid, lithium, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), medicines for mental problems (eg, quetiapine), metoclopramide, nefazodone, quinidine, rasagiline, selegiline, serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists (eg, sumatriptan), sibutramine, St. John's wort, trazodone, or tryptophan as they may lead to such side effects as fever, rigid muscles, blood pressure changes, mental changes, confusion, irritability, agitation, delirium, and coma;
- anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), aspirin, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen) as they may increase the possibility of bleeding as well as stomach bleeding;
- diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) as they may increase the possibility of decreased blood sodium levels;
- tramadol as it may lead to increased possibility of seizures;
- astemizole, cisapride, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine, thioridazine), pimozide, or terfenadine as they may lead to such heart problems as irregular heartbeat;
- cyproheptadine as it may lower the effect of the Luvox usage;
- alosetron, aripiprazole, benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam, diazepam), beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol, propranolol), carbamazepine, clozapine, diltiazem, methadone, mexiletine, phenytoin, ramelteon, risperidone, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (eg, venlafaxine), tacrine, theophylline, tizanidine, or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) as Luvox may increase the possibility of these drugs side effects.
Possible Side Effects
Any medication may lead to side effects, however different people experience them differently. Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the following side effects:
- Constipation; decreased sexual ability; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; gas; headache; increased sweating; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness; sore throat; stomach upset; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weakness.
Contact your doctor at once in case you have any of the following side effects:
- Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bizarre behavior; black or bloody stools; chest pain; confusion; exaggerated reflexes; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; memory loss; new or worsening agitation, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated feeling of well-being, restlessness, or inability to sit still; painful menstrual periods; persistent, painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; stiff muscles; stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual or severe mental or mood changes; unusual swelling; vision changes.
