Drug Uses
Emsam is intended to treat depression. It is used as a skin patch.
How Taken
The medication should be applied on the skin. Follow the directions applied to the patches. The place to apply the patch should be on the upper torso, arm or thigh. It should be clean, dry, undamaged and hairless. Wash your hands and the area for application and dry them before using the patch. The patch should be removed from the pouch and applied at once. Avoid cutting the patch. Press the patch with the palm to place it firmly. You should wash your hand with soap after you have applied the patch. The patches should be replaced every day at the same time. New patch should be placed at the new area of body. You should not use several patches simultaneously. In case you have the patch peeled off apply another one to a new place and follow your regular schedule. Discard the used patches to prevent children and pets contact with them. It permitted to take shower, bath and swim when using the patch. Prevent the contact of the patch with any type of heat sources. Patients in ages may be more sensitive to the effect of the medicine therefore they should use it with caution. Treating children with the patch may require special care; therefore consult with your doctor concerning this matter.
Missed Dose
In case you missed to change the patch you should do it as you have remembered about it. Use only one patch each time and avoid leaving it on the body for longer period of time than it is prescribed. In case you have your patch peeled off use the new one and follow you regular schedule further.
Storage
Keep the medicine at the room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep the patches only in the original pouch.
Warnings Precautions
Use the patch only one time. Do not cut the patch into pieces. Using the patch can cause dry mouth, suck candies or drink some fluid to avoid dry mouth.
Possible Side Effects
Let your doctor know immediately in case you have such side effects as: confusion or disorientation; fast heartbeat or a change in the way your heart beats (palpitations); lightheadedness or fainting, especially if it leads to any falls; mania symptoms (like inability to sleep, restlessness, hyperactivity or other unusual behaviors); onset of severe nausea or feeling sick to your stomach; rapid onset of sweating; severe headache; stiff neck; symptoms of serotonin syndrome (nausea, vomiting, sedation, dizziness, sweating, flushed face, confusion, restlessness, muscle spasm or twitching, shivering, and hypertension); worsening depression. You may also experience such side effects as: dry mouth; minor weight loss; skin rash, mild redness or itching in the area where you apply the patch and it does not go away within several hours after removing the patch; stomach problems, such as temporary diarrhea, heartburn or gas (flatulence). Contact your doctor in case these side effects persist for a long period of time.
More Information
Store the medicine in the place beyond the reach of children and pets, in a box that children unable to open. Fold the used patch with sticky sides together, place it into an opened pouch and discard so the children and pets couldn't reach it.
