Drug Uses
Depakote is intended to control certain types of seizures throughout epilepsy treatment period. The medication is also used when treating manic phase of bipolar disorders as well as preventing migraines.
How Taken
Take the drug in accordance with your doctor directions.
- Take the medication orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it. In case you experience stomach upsets take the drug with food.
- Swallow the whole pill without chewing or crushing it.
- Take the drug at the same time and you will not miss any dose.
- Don’t stop the therapy even in case your condition improved. Avoid missing doses. The medication has its best effect when thee is its constant level in your organism.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Depakote is an anticonvulsant. It works by reducing or preventing the number of seizures by controlling the abnormal activity of nerve impulses in the brain and central nervous system.
Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten to take the dose do it at the moment you have remembered about it, however skip it in case it is the time for your next dosage and follow your usual schedule. Avoid taking two doses of the drug simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature not higher than 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets. Avoid keeping the drug in the bathroom.
Warnings Precautions
Don’t take the medication in case:
- you have allergy reaction to any component of it.
- you have experience certain liver conditions, low level of the enzyme ornithine carbamoyltransferase, or disordered urine cycle.

Important :
- Avoid driving or operating any machinery until you know your body reaction to this drug.
- Avoid stopping the therapy suddenly as this may cause seizures.
- Taking the drug may also lead to inflammation of the pancreas that may be quite life-threatening. Its signs are stomach pain, vomiting, or appetite loss. Contact your doctor in case you experience any of these effects.
- Let your doctor or dentist know you are using the drug before you get any treatment.
- Patients experiencing diabetes may have wrong results of their test for urine ketones. Contact your doctor before changing the diet or your diabetes medication dosage.
- You may need to have several lab tests to monitor your condition throughput your therapy period. Don’t miss doctor’s appointments.
- Patients in ages may be more sensitive to the side effects of the drug, like sleepiness.
- The drug is to be used with caution when treating children below 10 years old as it is not still proved the effectiveness of this drug for the children. And the children below 2 years old may have certain liver problems.
- The medication can harm human fetus, thus contact you doctor before taking the drug throughout pregnancy period. Avoid breast-feeding throughout Depakote therapy period as the drug may appear in breast milk.

- nausea; stomach pain; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weight changes.

- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abdominal cramps; abnormal thinking; change in menstrual period; changes in mood or behavior; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; difficulty speaking; difficulty urinating or other urination problems; extreme tiredness; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; general body discomfort; hallucinations; hearing loss; involuntary movements of the arms and legs; involuntary movements or chewing movements of face, jaw, mouth, or tongue; joint pain; lack of energy; loss of appetite; loss of coordination; loss of seizure control; memory loss; nosebleed; pounding in the chest; severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; sore throat; swelling of the arms or legs; tremor; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual weakness; vision changes; yellowing of skin or eyes.
