Drug Uses
Compazine is intended to control hard forms of nausea, vomiting as well as to treat schizophrenia. This medication is also prescribed for 4 weeks period treatment of generalized nonpsychotic anxiety. However your doctor may prescribe this medication for several other conditions as well.
How Taken
Take the medication in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read the information on the label to find out the proper dosage.
- The medicine should be taken orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it. In case you experience stomach upset you should take the drug throughout the meal.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Compazine is a phenothiazine. It works by blocking a certain chemical (dopamine) in the brain.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug skip it and follow your common schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the drug at the temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets. It is also allowed to keep the drug at the temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for a short period of time. Avoid keeping the drug in the bathroom.
Warnings/Precautions
Don't take the drug in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any component of the drug;
- you use astemizole, cisapride, or terfenadine;
- you experience strong central nervous system depression.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Certain medical conditions may come into interaction with Compazine. Let your doctor know in case you experience any medical conditions especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant, or you are at the pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- you use any prescribed or not prescribed drugs as well as herbal or dietary preparations;
- you experience any allergic reactions to drugs, foods and etc;
- you ever had heart diseases, central nervous system depression, blood, liver problems as well as low blood or high eye pressure, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, bone marrow problems, unusual muscle movements, Parkinson disease, a predisposition to glaucoma, Reye syndrome, prostate problems, or seizures, or you have alcoholism.
Certain medications may come into interaction with Compazine. Let your doctor know in case you are using other drugs especially such as:
- anticholinergics (eg, diphenhydramine, oxybutynin, scopolamine) or lithium as they lower the effect of the Compazine intake;
- angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), anticholinergics (eg, diphenhydramine, oxybutynin, scopolamine), general anesthetics (eg, thiopental), haloperidol, methyldopa, or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) as they may increase the possibility of the such side effects as seizures;
- ACE inhibitors (eg, enalapril), anticholinergics (eg, diphenhydramine, oxybutynin, scopolamine), astemizole, cisapride, dofetilide, haloperidol, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), methyldopa, metrizamide, naltrexone, polypeptide antibiotics (eg, actinomycin), serotonin receptor antagonist antiemetics (eg, ondansetron), terfenadine, tramadol, trazodone, or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) as Compazine may increase the possibility of these drugs side effects;
- bromocriptine, guanethidine, levodopa, or pergolide as Compazine may lower the effect of these drugs use;
- lithium as this can lead to sudden toxic effects.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case any of the following side effects last s for a long period of time:
- blurred vision; chills; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; jitteriness; nasal congestion; sleeplessness.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; changes in breasts; changes in menstrual period; changes in vision; difficulty swallowing; drooling; excessive sweating; fever; inability to move eyes; increased body heat; involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (e.g., protrusion of tongue, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements); irregular or fast heartbeat; mask-like face; muscle stiffness; muscle spasms of face, neck, or back; prolonged or painful erection; restlessness; rigid muscles; shuffling walk; sore throat; tension in legs; tremors; twitching or twisting movements; unusual eye movements; weakness of arms or legs; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should use this drug. Avoid giving it to anyone else.
