Drug Uses
Clozaril is intended to treat schizophrenia for those patients for whom other medications turned to ineffective. The drug reduces the possibility of attempts to suicide. However your doctor may prescribe this drug to several other conditions as well.
How Taken
Take the medication in accordance with your doctor prescription.
- The drug should be taken throughout the meal as well as before or after it. However take the drug throughout the meal in case you experience the stomach upset.
- Don't stop the therapy even in case your condition improves. Avoid missing the dosages.
- Use the drug at the same time every day not to miss the doses.
- Don't stop therapy without consulting with your doctor.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Clozaril is an atypical antipsychotic. It may work by affecting certain chemicals in the brain. This has an effect on thinking and behavior.
Missed Dose
In case you missed to take the drug do it at the moment you have remembered about it, however skip it in case it is the time of your next dosage and follow your common schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously. In case you missing to use the drug for over 2 days don't return to your common schedule and contact your doctor for further instructions.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place in properly closed container beyond the reach of the children and pets. Avoid keeping the drug in the bathroom.
Warnings/Precautions
Don't take the medication in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any component of the drug;
- you experience bone marrow, blood cells problems or ever had blood problems due to Clozaril;
- you experience sudden seizures or loss of bowel muscle movement;
- you experience drowsiness;
- you use other drugs that may lead to blood problems. Contact your doctor to find out what medications may cause such problems.
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Clozaril may come into interaction with certain medical conditions. Let your doctor know in case you experience any of them and especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant, or you are at the pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- you use any prescribed or not prescribed drugs as well as herbal or dietary preparations;
- you experience allergic reaction to drugs, foods and etc;
- you experienced blood clots, increased blood cholesterol levels as well as other blood, heart, lung or breathing problems;
- you ever had increased prostate, long-lasting and painful erections, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, seizures, stomach or bowel problems or dementia;
- you have weak health, or you or anyone of your family experience diabetes or has an excessive weight;
- you experience low activity of enzymes that metabolize certain drugs.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the following side effects for long period of time:
- constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; heartburn; increased sweating or saliva production; lightheadedness when you stand up; nausea; strange dreams; trouble sleeping; weight gain.
Contact your doctor at once in case you have any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; calf pain or tenderness; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; decreased coordination; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; increased hunger, thirst, or urination; infection; involuntary movements of the tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (e.g., tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, chewing movements); loss of appetite; numbness of an arm or leg; rapid breathing; restlessness; seizures; severe headache, dizziness, or vomiting; severe or persistent nausea or constipation; severe stomach pain; shortness of breath; stiff muscles; sudden, unusual weight gain; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; tremor; trouble swallowing; uncontrolled muscle movements; unusual mental or mood changes; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision changes; vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should use the medication. Avoid giving it to anyone else. Contact your doctor in case your condition remains the same or worsens.
