Drug name
Clavamox (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate)
Drug Uses
Clavamox is intended to treat such pet infections as:
- Skin and soft-tissue infections such as wounds, abscesses, cellulitis, and superficial/juvenile and deep pyoderma due to susceptible strains of the following organisms: lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus, non-lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and E. coli.
- Periodontal infections due to susceptible strains of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
How Taken
The common dose to treat dogs is 6.25 mg/lb two times a day.
The common dose to treat cats is 62.5 mg two times a day.
A treatment period of 5-7 days or 2 days after the ceasing of the symptoms is prescribed for treating skin and soft-tissue infections like abscesses, cellulitis, wounds, superficial or juvenile pyoderma, and periodontal infections. In case 5-day therapy period shows no results the treatment should be stopped and the pet condition should be reconsidered. For instance, deep pyoderma may sometimes need 21-day therapy period. However the treatment period should not last more then 30 days.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Clavamox can be used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as respiratory, ear, urinary tract and skin infections. Clavamox may also be used for purposes other than those listed.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to give a dosage of the drug to your pet do it at the time you have remembered about it, but skip it in case it is the time for next dosage and follow you common dosage schedule. Avoid giving 2 doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the drug at the temperature between 39 and 86 degrees F (4 and 30 degrees C) beyond the reach of children and pets.
Warnings Precautions
- Avoid using the drug in case your pet experience allergic reaction to penicillins or cephalospirins.
- The medicine includes a semisynthetic penicillin that may cause allergic reactions. In case it happens to be give your pet epinephrine and/or steroids.
- It is not studied yet whether it is safe to use the drug in pregnant or breeding pets.
Possible Side Effects
- Contact your veterinarian at once in case your pet has severe diarrhea lasting over 3 hours.
- Stop the therapy and contact your veterinarian in case your pet experiences allergic reaction (shortness of breath; hives; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; rash or fainting).
- Using the drug may also cause such side effects as mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, yeast or fungal infection.
Do not stop the therapy but contact your veterinarian in case your pet experiences any of the above mentioned side effects.
More Information
Let your veterinarian know in case your pet was given any antibiotic, allopurinol or probenecid before starting the Clavamox treatment. In such cases the use of the drug may be prohibited or the dosage may need certain adjustment. Other medicines may also interact with Clavamox. Therefore contact your veterinarian before giving your pet any OTC medicines including also vitamins, minerals and herbal products.
