Drug Uses
Ciprofloxacin is intended to treat the infections cased by susceptible bacteria. It may be such infections like: infections of the skin, lungs, airways, bones, and joints. It is also applied when treating urinary infections caused by E. coli bacteria. It is also used to treat diarrhea appeared due to such bacteria like E. coli, campylobacter jejuni, and shigella bacteria.
How Taken
The medicine should be taken throughout the meal as well as before or after it. The patients experiencing certain liver or kidney problems may need individually adjusted dosage. When treating urinary infections the medicine should be taken 2 times a day for 3 days.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Many common infections in humans are caused by single cell organisms, called bacteria. Bacteria can grow and multiply, infecting different parts of the body. Medicines that control and eradicate these bacteria are called antibiotics. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that stops multiplication of bacteria by inhibiting the reproduction and repair of their genetic material (DNA).
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the dose do it at the moment you have remembered about it but skip it in case you should already take another dosage. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously unless your doctor advises it.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature below 86 degrees F.
Warnings Precautions
The medication may increase your skin sensitivity to the sun. Therefore avoid prolonged being at the sun or wear on protective clothes or use the sunscreen. Contact your doctor in case you have severe burning, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after being at the sun. Use the medication with caution when operating any machinery as taking the medicine may lead to dizziness. Do not take the products containing caffeine as the medicine may increase its effects. In case you take the medicine along with theophylline your doctor must appoint regular blood tests for you. The drug should be taken with caution by the patients with central nervous system diseases like seizures. Children and people below 18 years old should not use the medication as it may turn to be dangerous for them. Many drugs containing ciprofloxacin can change the normal bacteria in colon. Taking the medicine may increase the risk of bleeding. The medicine should not be used by the women throughout pregnancy and breast feeding periods as it is not clear whether it may appear in breast milk or not.
Possible Side Effects
Taking the medicine can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, headache, and restlessness. Rare allergic reactions have been described, such as hives and anaphylaxis (shock).

Contact you doctor at once in case you have an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); seizures; confusion or hallucinations; liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue); or muscle or joint pain; skin rash; or chest pain, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or swelling of the legs or feet. Contact your doctor and continue taking the drug in case you have: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; headache; dizziness or lightheadedness; drowsiness; insomnia; ringing in the ears; or increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Any other side effects not listed above may also take place. Contact your doctor in case any of them becomes too bothersome.
