Drug Uses
Bactrim is intended to use as an antibacterial combination product that is produced in double strength tablets.
How Taken
Use the drug in accordance with your doctor prescriptions:
- Take the medicine orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it.
- The best effect is reached if take the drug at the same time.
- Take the medication wit a glass of water. Take several more glasses of water throughout a day in case your doctor advises not to do it.
- Don't stop the therapy to clear the infection completely. Continue the therapy even in case your condition becomes better.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Bactrim is an antibiotic combination containing a sulfonamide antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug do it at the moment oyou have remembered about it, but skip it in case it is the time for your next dosage and follow you usual dosage schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the drug at the temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets. Avoid keeping the medication in the bathroom.
Warnings Precautions
Don't take the medicine in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any of its components;
- you experienced severe allergic reaction to any sulfonamide (sulfa) medicine;
- you use dofetilide;
- you experience anemia due to decreasedlevel of folate in blood or urinary blockage;
- you are at the 38 or later week of pregnancy or you are at the breast-feeding period;
- the patient to be treated is below 2 moths old.
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Note:
- Taking the drug may increase your sensitivity to the sunrays. Thus avoid being at the sun, under sunlamps or tanning booths until you are not aware of your body reaction to this drug. Use sunscreen or clothes in case you have to be at the sun for long time.
- Contact your doctor immediately in case you experience stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools. Avoid treating diarrhea without consulting with your doctor at first.
- Take the medication for the whole treatment period, otherwise you may not clear the infection completely or bacteria may adjust to the treatment. Thus the infection will be more difficult to clear in the future.
- The medicine is intended to treat only bacteria not the viral infections.
- Prolonged or repeated use of the medication may cause second infection. Contact your doctor in case you experience any symptoms of the second infection. In such case it is often required to change the medication.
- Note for the diabetes patients. Taking the drug may change the amount of sugar in your blood. Monitor the blood sugar level. Contact your doctor before changing the dosage of your medication against diabetes.
- In case the patient is below 10 years old experiencing diarrhea or an infection of the stomach bowel the medicine must be used with caution.
- The drug may affect certain lab tests. Therefore don't forget to le tyour doctor know you are using Bactrim at the moment.
- Several lab tests like complete blood cell counts or kidney function checks may be required throughout the therapy period with the aim to monitor you condition.
- Contact your doctor before taking the medication throughout pregnancy or breast -feeding period.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case following side effects last for long period of time:
- appetite loss; nausea; vomiting.
Contact you doctor immediately in case you have:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blistered, peeling, red, or swollen skin; bloody or black, tarry stools; chest pain; chills, fever, or sore throat; decreased urination; depression; hallucinations; irregular heartbeat; joint or muscle pain; painful or stiff neck; purple patches under the skin; seizures; severe diarrhea; severe or persistent cough; severe or persistent headache; severe or persistent nausea or vomiting; shortness of breath; stomach cramps/pain; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; unusually pale skin; vaginal irritation or discharge; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should use the medicine. Avoid giving the medication to anyone else.
