Drug Uses
Augmentin is to be used as antibiotic of penicillin class. It treats the bacteria in the body and is effective in relation to tonsillitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and infections of the skin as well as to other directions.
How Taken
The drug is produced in the form of capsule, chewable tablet, liquid and pediatric drop to oral use. The medicine should be taken 3 times a day. Take the drug in accordance with the instruction and contact your doctor in case you are not sure how to use the drug. Avoid increasing or decreasing the prescribed dosage. In case you use liquid or pediatric drops – shake them carefully before the use. In case you use pediatric drop – use the bottle dropper to measure the required dosage. Pediatric drops as well as liquid may be taken by placing on the tongue of the child or mixed with the milk, juice and other liquid and taken at once. In case you use tablets – crush them and chew properly before the use. In case you use capsules – take it with a glass of the water. Don’t stop the therapy in case your condition becomes better and don’t discontinue the therapy without first consulting with your doctor.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Augmentin is an antibiotic of the penicillin type. It is effective against different bacteria such as H. influenzae, N. gonorrhea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain strains of Staphylococci. Chemically, it is closely related to penicillin and ampicillin. Addition of clavulanic acid to amoxicillin in Augmentin enhances the effectiveness of this antibiotic against many other bacteria that are ordinarily resistant to amoxicillin.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug do it at the time you have remembered about it and take the dosage left at the equal time intervals. But in case it is the time for your next dosage skip the missed one and follow your usual schedule. Avoid taking two doses simultaneously in case your doctor does not advise it.
Storage
Keep the medication beyond the reach of children in a cool and dark place. Avoid keeping the tablets or the capsules of the drug in the bathroom or in other damp places as high temperature and moisture may cause the damage of the drug. Keep the liquid form of the drug in the refrigerator as high temperature may cause the break down of the medication. But avoid freezing of the medication. Follow the instructions attached. Avoid keeping the drug that is out of date or not used anymore. Keep the discarded drugs beyond the reach of children.
Warnings Precautions
Avoid using the drug without consulting with your doctor in case you have allergic reaction to any penicillin or to a cephalosporin. Let your doctor know in case you experience kidney disease, or stomach or intestinal disease before starting Augmentin therapy. The medication is not dangerous for human fetus and may be used throughout the pregnancy period. However consult your doctor at first before taking the drug throughout pregnancy period. The drug may appear in the breast milk and thus may cause a yeast infection, diarrhea, or an allergic reaction in a nursing baby. Though the drug cannot be really dangerous for the baby consult your doctor at first before using the dug at the breast-feeding period.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor at once in case you have severe or bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps while Augmentin treatment. Don’t take the medication and contact your doctor as soon as possible in case you have an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; hives; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting); seizures; or unusual bleeding or bruising. Don’t stop the treatment but consult with your doctor in case you have mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, white patches on the tongue (thrush/ yeast infection); itching or discharge of the vagina (vaginal yeast infection); black, "hairy" tongue or sore mouth or tongue. You may also experience other side effects not mentioned here. Contact your doctor in case some condition lasts for a long period of time or bothers you.

Stop the using Augmentin and clavulanate potassium and contact your doctor as soon as possible in case you have: an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; hives; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting); or diarrhea that is severe or lasts longer than 3 days. Don’t stop using Augmentin and clavulanate potassium but consult with your doctor in case you have mild diarrhea; nausea or vomiting; rash; white patches in the mouth (thrush/ yeast infection); or vaginal yeast infection or diaper rash. You may also experience other side effects. Contact your doctor in case any of them bother you.
