Drug Uses
Anafranil is intended to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, however your doctor may also prescribe this drug for several other conditions.
How Taken
Take the drug in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read the information on the label to find out proper dosage. A Medication guide is enclosed to the drug. Read it every time when you renew your drug supply.
The medication should be taken orally to decrease the possibility of stomach upset. The drug may need 2-3 weeks for its effects to reveal. Don't stop the therapy even in case your condition improves. Avoid missing the dosages.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Anafranil is a tricyclic antidepressant. It works by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain, which helps to reduce obsessive-compulsive behaviors.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the drug do it at the time you have remembered about it but skip it in case it is the time for your next dosage and follow you common schedule. Avoid taking 2 dosages simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the drug at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets.
Warnings/Precautions
Don't take the medication in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any component of the drug;
- you used furazolidone or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) throughout the last 2 weeks or you are using astemizole or terfenadine;
- you have experienced heart attack recently.
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Certain medical conditions may come into interaction with Anafranil. Let your doctor know in case you experience any medical conditions, especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant or you are in the pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- you use any prescribed as well as not prescribed medications, herbal or dietary preparations;
- you experience allergic reactions to drugs, foods and etc;
- you use alcohol a lot or experienced alcohol abuse;
- you use thyroids or used overactive thyroid;
- you experienced adrenal gland problems, glaucoma, heart, liver or kidney problems as well as diabetes, seizures, difficulty when urinating or blood disease porphyria as well as other blood problems;
- you ever had suicidal thoughts or attempts as well as bipolar disorder or other mental problems;
- you have electroshock therapy or are going to have surgery.
Certain medication may come into interaction with Anafranil. Let your doctor know in case you use any other drugs and especially such as:
- azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole), cimetidine, duloxetine, haloperidol, methylphenidate, mibefradil, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), terbinafine, or valproic acid as they may contribute to the growth of the Anafranil 's side effects;
- astemizole, furazolidone, ketolide antibiotics (eg, telithromycin), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), pimozide, or terfenadine as they may increase the possibility of increased blood pressure as well as other heart problems or seizures;
- barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital) or phenytoin as they may lower the effect of the Anafranil intake;
- anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), carbamazepine, or sympathomimetics (eg, phenylephrine) as Anafranil may increase the possibility of these drugs side effects;
- clonidine, guanethidine, or guanfacine as Anafranil may lower the effect of these drugs use.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the following side effects for a long period of time:
- constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; irritability; loss of appetite; nausea; nightmares; sweating; tiredness; upset stomach; vomiting; weakness; weight loss or gain.
Contact you doctor immediately in case you have any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision or other vision changes; changes in sex drive; chest pain; confusion; decreased sexual ability; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; flushing; frequent or difficult urination; impulsive behavior or other unusual changes in behavior; mental or mood changes (eg, increased anxiety, mood swings, agitation, irritability, nervousness, restlessness); numbness or tingling of the skin; panic attacks; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe dizziness or drowsiness; sore throat; stomach pain; suicidal thinking or behavior; swelling of the testicles; tremor; trouble sleeping; trouble walking or keeping your balance; twitching of the face or tongue; uncontrolled movements or stiffness of arms and legs; unusual bleeding or bruising; worsening of depression; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
More Information
Only the patients with corresponding prescriptions should use this medication. Avoid giving it to anyone else. Contact your doctor in case your condition remains the same or worsens.
