Amoxil (Amoxicillin)
Drug Uses
Amoxil is intended to treat such infections as infections of the middle ear, tonsils, throat, larynx (laryngitis), bronchi (bronchitis), lungs (pneumonia), urinary tract, and skin. Amoxil is also recommended when treating gonorrhea.
How Taken
Amoxil is prescribed to adult patients according to their condition in following dosage: 250 mg every 8 hours, 500 mg every 8 hours, 500 mg every 12 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours. However when treating gonorrhea the adults are prescribed a dose of 3 g.
To children over 3 month but less than 40 kg it is prescribed according to their condition in following dosage: 25 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12 hours, 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 hours, 40 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 hours or 45 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12 hours.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to take the medicine do it at the moment you have remembered but skip it in case it is the time of your next dosage and follow your usual schedule. You shouldn’t use double dose simultaneously.
Storage
Amoxil capsules and 125 and 250 mg dry powder should be kept at the temperature not exceeding 20 degrees C (68 degrees F); tablets and chewable tablets and 200 and 400 mg dry powder should be kept at the temperature not exceeding 25 degrees C(77 degrees F).
Warnings Precautions
Consult your doctor in case you have any allergies especially to Amoxil itself, penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
Talk to your doctor about your previous diseases especially if you had kidney disease, other infections (e.g., mononucleosis). Discuss with your doctor possibility to use the medicine in case you have phenylketonuria (PKU) or other conditions that restricts the use of aspartame (or phenylalanine).
Talk to your doctor before taking medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding periods.
Possible Side Effects
Taking the medicine may cause such side effects as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Contact your doctor in case any of these effects lasts for a long time or becomes worse.
Taking the medicine can also lead to staining of the teeth. However it is easily removed with your teeth brush.
Such side effects as listed below may also occur. In case you experience any of them contact you doctor immediately.
- dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes or skin, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever.
In case you have: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool don’t take any medicines and contact your doctor at once.
Long term use of the Amoxil may lead to oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection).
Consult your doctor in case you have white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.
More Information
Do not give this drug to the patients that have no directions to use the drug. The medicine shouldn’t be used to treat other infections except for the cases mentioned by your doctor.
When using Amoxil for a long period of time laboratory as well as medical tests are required to monitor patient’s condition.
