Drug Uses
Amantadine is intended to prevent and treat certain types of flu. Furthermore it is also used to treat Parkinson disease and some uncontrolled movements due to intake of certain medications. Your doctor may also prescribe this medication to treat other condition.
How Taken
Follow your doctor's dosage directions.
- The drug should be taken orally throughout the meal as well as before or after it.
- In case you use the drug to treat flu don't discontinue the treatment until it comes to the end. Take the drug even in case you feel yourself better. Such approach will help you to get rid if the infection.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Amantadine is an antiparkinson and antiviral agent. How Amantadine works against the flu is not known. It may block reproduction of the virus and decrease the ability of the virus to get into the cells. How Amantadine works against Parkinson disease is not known. It may increase a certain chemical in the brain.
Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten to take the drug do it at the moment you have remembered but skip it in case it is the time for your next dosage and follow your common schedule. Avoid taking 2 doses simultaneously.
Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets.
Warnings Precautions
Do not take the drug in case:
- you are at the pregnancy or breast-feeding period, or planning to become pregnant;
- you are taking any other medication, herbal preparation or dietary supplement;
- you experience allergic reaction to medications, foods or other substances;
- you experience certain heart problems, swelling of your hands or feet, mental or mood problems, suicidal thoughts or actions, seizures, glaucoma, low blood pressure, dizziness when you stand or sit up, an eczema-like rash, or kidney or liver problems;
- you received an intranasal flu vaccine throughout the last two weeks.
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the above mentioned conditions.
Note:
- Taking the medication may cause such side effect as drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision that can be amplified by the intake of alcohol or other medications. Thus take the drug with caution and avoid operating any machinery until you are aware of your body reaction to the drug.
- Taking the medication may lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. And such factors as alcohol, hot weather, exercise or fever may worsen these effects. Thus avoid sharp movements.
- Decrease the amount of the alcohol you drink daily and contact your doctor before drinking any alcohol or talking any other medications.
- Avoid being overheated as heatstroke make may take place.
- The medication is efficient against several types of the flu but not other viral infections.
- In case you are using the drug to treat flu avoid discontinue the therapy period to get rid of the infection completely. Or the virus may turn to be less sensitive to the drug that will make any treatment in future more difficult.
- Don't get live nasal flu vaccine in 14 days before or 2 days after Amantadine therapy period as this will cause the vaccine not act properly. Consult with your doctor before getting the vaccine.
- In case you use the medication to treat Parkinson disease increase your physical activity step by step as your condition becomes better.
- Avoid sharp discontinue of the Amantadine therapy period without first consulting with your doctor. He may first decrease the daily dosage to prevent possible side effects

- Contact your doctor in case your condition remains the same or becomes worse.
- Contact your doctor before taking the medication throughout pregnancy and breast-feeding period.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you have any of the following side effects:
- appetite loss; blurred vision; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth or nose; headache; lightheadedness; nausea; strange dreams; tiredness; trouble sleeping.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience any of the following:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); aggression; agitation; confusion; depression; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; memory loss; mental or mood changes; muscle problems (e.g., spasms, uncontrolled movements); paranoid thoughts; personality changes; seizures; severe or persistent drowsiness or trouble sleeping; shortness of breath; sore throat; swelling of hands, legs, feet, or ankles; thoughts of suicide; trouble urinating; unusual anxiety or irritability; vision changes.
