Drug Uses
Abilify is intended to treat agitation occurred due to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. However your doctor may also prescribe you this medication for several other conditions.
How Taken
Take the drug in accordance with your doctor prescriptions. Read the information on the label to find out the proper dosage. The medication is commonly used as an injection in a hospital. Abilify is intended only for deep muscle injections. Don’t use the medication as an under skin or vein injection. Drug Class and Mechanism
Abilify is an atypical antipsychotic. Exactly how Abilify works is not known. It affects certain substances in the brain.
Missed Dose
In case you have missed to use the medication and you are experiencing agitation follow the dosage instructions prescribed you by your doctor. Storage
Keep the medication at the temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a cool, dry and dark place beyond the reach of children and pets.
Warnings/Precautions
Don’t use the drug in case:
- you have allergic reaction to any component of the drug.

Certain medical conditions may come into interaction with the drug. Let your doctor know in case you experience any medical conditions and especially in case:
- you are going to become pregnant, you are at the pregnancy or breast-feeding period;
- you use any prescribed or not prescribed medications, herbal or dietary preparations;
- you have allergic reaction to medications, foods and etc;
- you experienced heart, blood vessel problems, stroke or low blood pressure;
- you ever had seizures, dementia, Alzheimer disease, depression as well as other mental or mood disorders, or suicidal thoughts or attempts;
- you have problems with swallowing or experienced neuroleptic malignant syndrome;
- you are dehydrated, have decreased blood volume or using medications for high blood pressure;
- you or anyone from your family experienced diabetes or has excessive weight.
Certain medications may come interaction with Abilify. Let your doctor know in case you are using any other medications especially such as:
- anticholinergics (eg, benztropine, methscopolamine) as this may increase the possibility of overheating;
- benzodiazepines (eg, lorazepam), imidazole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), quinidine, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), or voriconazole as they may contribute to the growth of the Abilify’s side effects;
- carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or rifampin as they may lower the effect of the Abilify’s intake;
- Alpha-blockers (eg, terazosin) as Abilify may increase the possibility of the side effects caused by these medications intake.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor in case you experience any of the following side effects for a long period of time:
- abnormal dreams; blurred vision; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; increased saliva production; lightheadedness; nausea; stomach upset; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weight gain.
Contact your doctor at once in case you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal thinking; chest pain; confusion; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; increased sweating; increased thirst, urination, or appetite; involuntary movements of the tongue, face, mouth, jaw, arms, legs, or back (eg, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements); loss of control over urination; loss of coordination; mental or mood changes (eg, anxiety, depression, hostility); muscle tremor, jerking, or stiffness; one-sided weakness; seizures; severe restlessness; shortness of breath; suicidal thoughts or attempts; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; trouble swallowing; trouble walking; unusual bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision or speech changes.
